No roof of your own?

A battery on its own still pays.

Unit, townhouse, shaded roof, or a body corporate that won't have panels on it. A battery can still take a real chunk off your evening power bill, and no panels are needed.

How it works without panels

Cheap power in, dear power skipped.

    It fills up when power is cheap

    On the right Ergon plan, power in the middle of the day costs a fraction of what it costs at dinner time. The battery charges from the grid then.

  2. 2

    It runs the house in the evening

    From late afternoon the house runs off the battery instead of the grid: lights, TV, cooking, the aircon within reason. That is the expensive part of the day, and you mostly skip it.

  3. 3

    It keeps the lights on in a blackout

    Wired with a backup circuit, the fridge, the lights and a few power points stay on when the grid drops out.

The honest bit

No rebate, so it has to stack up on its own.

The federal battery rebate only applies when a battery is installed with solar. A battery on its own gets none of it, so this is straight maths: what you pay for evening power now, against what it costs to fill the battery at midday rates.

For some households that stacks up well. For others it doesn't, and we'll tell you which before you spend a cent. If you can put panels on later, a hybrid inverter now makes that an easy add.

What we check first

  • A switchboard that can take it (most can; some older ones need an upgrade first).
  • Somewhere it's allowed to go. Batteries can't be installed in living areas, so it's a garage, a carport or a sheltered outside wall. If your place has none of those, we'll tell you straight.
  • Body corporate sign-off if any of it sits on common property. We'll help with the paperwork.
  • A smart meter and a time-of-use plan with Ergon, so the cheap window actually exists on your bill. We sort that with them.
